What is the SilverSneakers Program?
The SilverSneakers program is a Medicare Advantage plan perk. This program is a senior workout program that you can personalize to your unique health and fitness goals. Best of all, it’s included for free with most Medicare Advantage plans! Using fitness programs like SilverSneakers may lower your healthcare costs in the long run. This is because of the benefits of preventative healthcare!
If you don’t have Medicare Advantage, don’t worry. Additionally, some Medicare Supplement Insurance plans cover SilverSneakers, too.
We’ll talk about Silver Sneakers today. It’s not a difficult topic. In fact, it’s an exciting topic that we hope you find helpful.
Medicare and the SilverSneakers program — a Senior Fitness Plan
Silver Sneakers is a free and flexible senior fitness program. This program includes:
- 16,000 + physical locations around the US, ranging from gyms to community centers.
- Travelers and “snowbirds” are welcome to visit any site and workout (as long as social distancing isn’t suggested.)
- Check out the Silver Sneakers interactive map for a location near you!
If your physician suggests social distancing, Silver Sneakers provides virtual fitness classes online. Also, workouts range from beginner stretching and yoga to martial arts and brisk cardio routines. Finally, long-time fitness lovers find classes for muscle building, strength training, and aerobics for cardio.
What’s Included with a SilverSneakers Gym Membership?
Silver Sneakers includes membership at any participating gym in the nationwide network. Facilities and amenities vary, but they generally include:
- Cardio equipment like exercise bikes, treadmills, and elliptical machines
- Strength training equipment, like weights and strength machines
- Amenities, like pools and walking tracks
Every participating gym is different. Some also have personal trainers, beverage centers, and massages. Silver Sneakers doesn’t pay for those. However, you are always welcome to make an arrangement for these with the facility.
Remember, you don’t need to be near a participating facility to be involved. Silver Sneakers offers a host of online workout videos and educational articles too.
Finally, remember that the Silver Sneakers program is only available to seniors with a Medicare Advantage plan or certain Medigap plans.
About Medicare Plans and SilverSneakers
Medicare Advantage plans are like Original Medicare, plus more. Every plan is unique. But they are all approved by the federal government. They’re monitored closely by Medicare and the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Medicare Advantage policies seem complicated until you get to know them. The team at CoverageCoach is here to help. Think of Medicare Advantage plans as an all-in-one alternative for Original Medicare, with more bells and whistles.
Medicare Advantage plans will always include Original Medicare benefits. For example, these benefits include hospital coverage and senior health insurance. Additionally, they provide valuable prescription drug coverage as seen in Medicare Part D. Finally, they include perks like senior nutrition apps, cooking classes, and the SilverSneakers program.
